I promise it’s a 2-minute read. Your toast takes longer.
After graduating from California Lutheran University in 2006, I moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career in television production. For the next 10 years, I worked my way up from casting assistant to casting producer, casting shows such as MTV’s The Real World, FOX’s MasterChef Junior and A&E’s Obsessed, among many others. The unique experience to spend a decade traveling the country and interviewing thousands of applicants helped expand my perspectives on a variety of issues, especially as it relates to equity and access.
Once our first daughter was born, my husband and I relocated back to Newbury Park, where we were raised, to set down some roots, and I transitioned from casting to a job copywriting for Mustang Marketing. Currently, I’m the agency’s director of marketing. In my role, I’ve seen firsthand the critical role our community colleges play in building and supporting local industries and growing/training a local workforce. It will be important to continue to build upon the excellent reputation our local community colleges have and the work already in place to support career pathways and student success.
Outside of my professional life, I am a founding board member and vice president for the 100% volunteer-run nonprofit Conejo Community Outreach. Alongside the other board members and wonderful volunteers, we package up and distribute more than 30,000 diapers to more than 400 children through our community diaper bank each month, which operates from the side yard of my house. That’s a COVID story for another day.
Both of my daughters attend school in the Conejo Valley Unified School District, and the PFA roped me in! I’ll be serving my fourth year as community relations chair for our Maple Mustangs, as well as my third year as district advisory council (DAC) rep for the school. I also serve on CVUSD’s communications committee. At the same time, I’ve also had the unique experience to follow along with the community college district’s progress the past six years, by the nature of working for a trustee that has served in this role for 12 years. The combined experiences and broad range of conversations about our local education and pathways have inspired me to do more.
WHY I AM RUNNING
I’m running because I want what is in the best interest of our community and students and I believe it’s an absolutely critical time to have advocates for accessible, high-quality education that prepares students for the pathway of their choice and supports a healthy local workforce.
I’m ready to work together with the board on behalf of the district’s students and faculty to analyze areas for improvement, champion solutions and advocate for the support and funding needed to meet our commitment to students, faculty and staff, and our community at large. When we work together, and remain focused on student outcomes, effective change is possible.
I have a flexible job and supportive boss, which will enable me to put in the work necessary to be successful in this position. Similarly, I have an extremely strong support base on the home front and nonprofit side, with both my husband and fellow CCO board members supporting my candidacy and the time commitment that will be required.
